This recent project in Hamilton involved breathing new life into a badly weathered decromastic stone-chip roof. Over the years, the roof had suffered from significant stone chip loss, moss and mould buildup, and structural dents from previous foot traffic. Because the roof also featured an existing solar panel setup, the project required precise masking and a careful, structured approach to ensure we restored the roof's integrity without causing further damage to the remaining coating.
A long-lasting roof restoration comes down to meticulous preparation. We executed a comprehensive, step-by-step repair process:
Targeted Treatment: We began with a specialized moss and mould treatment, allowing it a full two weeks to penetrate and break down the growth effectively.
Soft Chemical Wash: To preserve the remaining stone chips, we avoided high-pressure washing. Instead, we used a soft chemical wash to gently but thoroughly clean the surface.
Dent Removal & Crack Sealing: We carefully pulled out the dents left by previous tradespeople walking on the roof. Because pulling dents on decromastic tiles creates hairline cracks, we went over the entire roof to seal every newly exposed and existing crack using high-grade MS silicone.
Waterproofing: We completed the structural prep by nailing down all loose tiles to ensure complete waterproofing and wind resistance.
Once the roof was structurally sound, we focused on replacing the lost texture and building a durable protective barrier against the elements. After carefully masking off the solar panels, our team moved on to the coating phase.
Bitumen & Stone Chip Rebuilding: We applied a high-quality bitumen binder to lock in the remaining stone chips and prevent any further loss. We then reapplied new stone chips to the bare areas, seamlessly blending them into the roof's original profile.
Base Coat Application: A premium base coat was applied to seal the repairs and create an ideal bonding surface.
Double Top Coat: Finally, we applied two thick coats of premium Solagard roof paint in the popular, modern Ironsand colour, providing exceptional UV protection and a flawless finish.
The transformation was incredible. The roof went from looking tired and deteriorated to having a durable, modern, and highly protective finish that will stand up to the weather for years to come.
