Total Exterior Restoration & Painting Project
Welcome to another premium residential transformation by Tomar Contracting. When the exterior of your home is exposed to the harsh New Zealand elements, standard painting simply isn't enough - it requires comprehensive restoration. For this Hamilton property, we went beyond a simple colour update. We executed a complete structural preparation and high-end coating process to ensure this home is protected, durable, and looking brand new.
Watch the video above to see the complete transformation, and explore our step-by-step professional process below.
The Challenge: Assessing the Damage & Structural Repair
Rescuing Degraded Window Sills
Before a single drop of paint can be applied, a flawless foundation is required. On this property, the original wooden window sills had degraded significantly - to the point where the glass panes were at risk of falling out.
Our restoration began with a high-pressure water blast of the entire exterior to strip away loose debris and failing paint. We carefully removed all the old, brittle window putty and applied fresh glazing putty. To ensure complete structural integrity, we allowed the new putty to cure for a full two weeks. Once dry, we meticulously sanded the entire exterior, rebuilt any damaged weatherboard corners, and filled all gaps to create a perfectly smooth, ready-to-paint substrate.
The Process: Advanced Preparation & Liquid Masking
The Liquid Masking Advantage
Efficiency and precision are the hallmarks of a professional paint job. Rather than relying on traditional plastic wrap to protect the windows, we utilize an advanced liquid masking and tape system.
Plastic masking significantly obstructs interior light for the homeowner and is notorious for ripping away in the wind, creating a mess and exposing the glass to overspray. Liquid masking eliminates these issues. It stays firmly in place, allows natural light to enter the home during the project, and provides a perfect protective barrier. This innovative approach allows us to confidently use airless spraying techniques right up to the edges of the glass, ensuring a perfectly clean line without the risk of overspray.
The Outcome: Premium Application & Enamel Finishes
Flawless Coverage Built to Last
With the surface fully prepared and a high-quality primer applied, we move to the finishing coats. For the weatherboards and soffits, we utilized an airless sprayer to apply two thick, uniform coats of premium Wattyl Solagard. Spraying provides a vastly superior and smoother finish compared to traditional brush and roller methods, leaving no brush strokes behind.
For the high-traffic moving parts - the doors and windows - we switched to brush and roller to apply two coats of hard-wearing enamel. Enamel is absolutely essential for these areas; its high friction resistance prevents the paint from wearing down as doors and windows are opened and closed. The result is a crisp, premium look that is built to withstand daily use.
